Capturing screens continued:
1.) Use the AIM4170 program to do a "Save Image Bitmap"
Result = Area of graph Bob coded into the program
2.) Use Windows built-in Alt-PrintScreen button to capture the "Active window" to the clipboard
Result = Entire window including the border
3.) Use Windows built-in PrintScreen button to capture the "Desktop" to the clipboard
Result = Entire screen including other stuff you probably don't want
4.) If you are using Vista, use the built in Snipping tool
However if you want to capture a screen with a pull down menu which can't be done with Print Screen or Alt-PrintScreen (pull down window vanishes when trying to capture) there are several Windows based print capture programs that are either free or inexpensive. Also these programs allow partial screen captures and usually provide a quick editor to mark comments directly on the capture before you put it into Word, PowerPoint, email, or the Web. I recently needed a flexible capture program for another purpose and I downloaded 14 of them and played with them a bunch. Below are 3 that I liked and I have no affiliation with any of the companies.
5.) EasyCapture
www.easy-capture.com/ (free)
Program works pretty well but documentation is very sparse.
6.) FastStone Capture 6.3
www.faststone.org/ (free download and $20 for lifetime)
Program good at capturing nearly anything but I had a few issues capturing video and
some long and wide web pages. Also look at their free PhotoResizer program if you do
any web publishing.
7.) TechSmith Snagit 9.1
www.techsmith.com/ (free download and $50 to buy)
This is the best capture program out there. It does everything and there are many web
videos to explain the features. It has a great editor and for those who don't like how
most web pages print (if long and/or wide) it has a scrolling captures web pages which
can then be printed and you can remove the ads etc.
The advantage of a product like the AIM4170 is the ability to make measurements and then share them with others. I often find that it is much better to have an explanation imbedded in the screen capture where it can never be separated and where you can put arrows and other highlighting marks to show what is important than to describe the capture in text.
