Someone just emailed me asking if I had managed to persuade the AIM4170 software to run under Linux/Wine. My answer was "no". I did try the Wine route a couple of years ago, but without success.
But there is an alternative solution, whereby you can run the AIM4170 under Linux control. Go to my AIM4170 page:
homepage.ntlworld.com/wadei/aim4170.htm
then click on the link "AIM4170 Remote Operation HOWTO".
The HOWTO explains how the AIM software can be running on a Windows machine, but is controlled (via a tunnel and WiFi link) through a web browser running on a remote machine. The key point here is that the browser on the remote machine can be running under any operating system -- FireFox and Linux work just fine!
That HOWTO was originally written to show how you can drive the AIM4170 remotely from the backyard while you are tuning up antennas. But there is nothing to stop you installing the "remote" Linux machine on the bench right next to the Windows PC, communicating via the router. There is no need to get your fingers dirty on a Windows keyboard -- you can do everything through the browser on the Linux machine. And the Windows machine can be small and cheap -- the AIM software does not need great horsepower or a large amount of RAM.
So you can run the AIM4170 under Linux!
Bliss
P.S. Since writing the HOWTO, I have now switched to using "RealVNC" for the tunnel server on the Windows PC:
www.realvnc.com/products/free/4.1/winvnc.html
This has the big advantage over "LogMeIn" that you don't need an internet connection to set up the link between the two PCs -- a real plus when giving demos in village halls, clubrooms, hamventions etc.
