HELLO DAN, i'm not french, but french canadian if that'll do and parler francais, c'est ma langue maternelle. I dont have 4170, but it's little brother 2180 (dual port), virtually same as the 4170 for your purpose i would guess. Dont want to really turn this forum to an international one, but then pourquoi pas? Unless the moderator would see some inconvenience to do so.....

Hello Dan,
I forwarded your message to a person in France who has a lot of experience with the AIM4170.

Thanks Killy, I want not to speak in French into this forum (I understand that is an English Forum not a French forum :-) ) , but I looking for People who speak French because I want to contact them directly by email to put some questions .. If not I will try to put my questions here, for example I do not understand WHY, the 4170 use an external Power supply ? My computer has not a RS232 Interface and I have to use and USB-RS232 Adapter, so I have 12V 500ma with the USB, Why the 4170 has not an internal Power system from the USB via the RS232, Can I modified the 4170 to have an internal Power Supply ? Input from USB , 1 x 7812 for example and we have directly 6V 500ma, but I think that will be better if this modification has been set directly from the "manufacturer" W5BIG ?
Sorry for my English , I Hope that we will understand that I mind ...

Hello Dan, The USB port outputs 5V at 500ma maximum. The 500ma limit is optional and some computers don't output that much. The minimum external current limit for USB is 100ma. The AIM was designed for operation with an RS232 interface.
It is possible to put a battery inside the case for portable operation.
