I've been using the 4170 for several months now without any problems, until today.
When clicking on "Scan" and "Rescan", everything works fine, indefinitely. But when I click on "Recycle", it only runs for about 3 minutes, then stops with a message saying something like:
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ High Voltage. Measured internal voltage is > 245v (or some other very high number). Upper limit 16v. The power has been turned off. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
The actual DC input voltage (from the wallwart supplied with the unit) is 13.0v.
Now on software v684, but the same problem also occurs with earlier versions.
Please tell me my 4170 isn't broken!
Hi Ian,
Since the AIM works ok in the regular scan mode, it may be a software problem in the pc. Maybe the usb interface is getting overloaded.
There is a parameter in the AIM config file that determines how fast the recycle mode runs. Maybe slowing it down will help.
As it happens, I had a major crash on the laptop a couple of weeks ago, and Windows wouldn't even boot in Safe mode. I decided this would be a good opportunity to rebuild the machine from the ground up, which involved reinstalling Windows and all the hardware-specific device drivers. To the best of my knowledge, I used the same USB/Serial driver that was there originally, but I can't swear this is 1000% the case. Anyhow, following your suggestion, I increased the repeat scan delay time from 300mS to 1000mS, and that did the trick. The repeat scan has been running now for well over an hour without stopping. As it happens, the one-second delay before each scan is neither here nor there -- in fact, I think I prefer it. So many thanks Bob for your speedy and helpful response -- much appreciated. -- 73 Ian, G3NRW
I just received my new Power AIM-120 and have been learning my way around and measuring some small networks. I've run into the same problem regarding over voltage. I got a warning that the power supply voltage was up around 282 Volts and on another occasion the input signal voltage was around 260 Volts of RF - and that was with a good 50 Ohm Bird termination connected directly to the AIM-120. My power supply is the optional factory supplied wall-wart jobby. It had been working fine for several hours and then I opened the 84 page pdf version of the manual in a second window. When I shut the pdf file down things seemed to return to normal. I was playing with the recycle mode at the time.
