When one uses averaging above 32, there are strange results. For instance, when I place a 50 ohm load on AIM4170 (select averaging of 16 or below), I see Return Loss around -50dB. When I select averaging of 32, I see the Return Loss around -25dB. Higher settings, the software tells me there is an overload on the input! Does anyone else notice this?
There is also a green area showing up near the center of the Smith Chart Plots (there shouldn't be anything there at all).

The capability for averaging greater than 16x was implemented in version 4.7 of the firmware. Earlier version can only average by values up to 16. You can see your firmware version by clicking "Help" ->"About". Unfortunately, I forgot to check the version number in the new program and the pc does not limit averaging for early models of the 4170. I will add this check to the pc program now.
I'm sorry about the confusion. Look for a new pc update in a couple of days. This will be version 684.

Bob,
Thank You! Unfortunitely I have firmware version 4.1. Why can't the unit just grab that value twice (and divide by 2), to get a value for 32? Grab it 4 times for 64 (and divide by 4), for 62... Just a thought...
