The new AIM4170C is now available for immediate shipping. This features low frequency scanning down to 5KHz and improved signal averaging capability. Read about it here: www.w5big.com-- Bob

Hi Bob, as a new user who has just bought my AIM I am curious/confused as to which model I have actually got!!
Looking at the launch information for the 4170c - it looks identical to the one I have got. Like the photo, mine is stamped as 4170b but has the sync socket on the back. It also has the SO-239 socket rather than the bnc socket shown in other photos of the 4170b.
The serial number is #3623 and has 972.203.2008 marked above the serial no. plate.
Perhaps you could enlighten me.
Cheers
Alan

Hi Alan,
The 4170C and 4170B do look the same. The 4170C has some circuit changes to decrease the lower freq limit to 5KHz. Without these changes, the 4170B will go down to 20KHz with the latest version of the pc program. (earlier programs limited it to 100KHz).
During testing of the 4170C circuit, some 4170B's were modified for evaluation. Click Help -> About to see what it says in the dialog box. Those evaluation units will say "4170C".
These mods can be easily made by anyone who feels comfortable working with surface mount parts. It amounts to putting some new caps in parallel with existing caps to lower the frequency response. The whole process will take about 30 minutes. Performance at the high freq end is not affected.

Is it possible to upgrade 4170 to 4170C?
