Hi Everyone, What would be the correct test setup for checking an 80 meter half wave dipole fed with ladder line? Do I need a balun? I'm using a AIMUHF.
Thanks,
Ed

Ed,
Yes, I would use a balun. Next question is from what point do you want to measure things. At the input of the balun, at the output of the balun/input to the feedline or at the antenna? I've been down this road. You can expect that anything at the input(schack) end of the feed line will be very complex and difficult to interpret. I would suggest doing a custom cal with the standards at the end of the transmission line. I would use a huge number of calibration points. I would suggest running the laptop on batteries.
I ultimately ran my unit on batteries and attached my AIM 4170 directly to my dipole and hoisted it into the air. Used a long usb (50 foot) cable with some kind of repeater in it. This produced the best results.
Good luck.
